What are the 5 most important things to know and understand prior to starting a marketing coaching program?   Here are the keys to choosing a coaching program that is best for you:

Key #1:

The  first item to consider before starting coaching is how much experience the person has had in marketing and/or sales.  What is their track record?  Are they coaching from real business experience or just what they learned in a coaching class?  Can they provide referrals and contacts from successful, current clients?

Key #2:

If the person doing the coaching has a quality track record, the next question is can they teach it as well?  If you are doing the coaching in a group setting, as well as one-on-one, can the individual run and facilitate groups so that each participant achieves the goals of the course?  The marketing coach and/or sales coach also need to be able to work one-on-one.  Make sure that your marketing/sales coach has this skill set too. An instructor who can engage and energize participants with a positive style of coaching will deliver a better return on investment for clients.

Key #3:

The third item to consider when choosing coaching services is whether or not you have a good working relationship with your marketing coach or sales coach.  There needs to be a high level of trust and a certain level of compatibility. It is important that the instructor always work in parallel with management and their policy.  You need to have coaching that makes sure that you are held accountable for completing your tasks, developing your skills and moving your business forward.  This should be done in a respectful, friendly manner;  yet the coach’s eye should always be on the goal of coaching to grow your business in a cost-effective manner.

Key #4:

Does the individual providing the coaching “walk the walk?”  Make sure that your marketing coach has a positive attitude, and implements the same plans that they provide in the coaching program in their own business. Do they have a “do as I say, not as I do” attitude? Or, are your marketing coaches employing their strategies at every opportunity.

Key #5:

Here is a real bonus… Can the coaching service deliver guerrilla marketing coaching?  Guerilla marketing coaching is ideal for small and mid-sized firms that do not have massive marketing budgets that allow them to “carpet bomb” the market.  Guerrilla marketing coaches utilize energy, creativity, innovation, information and technology to achieve the same results for less money.  A guerrilla marketing coach will help you focus on what is profitable and then keep you focusing on the most profitable activities.  This will help you accelerate your growth cost-effectively.

Al Garlick has been focused on achieving the highest return on investment for his client’s his entire career – no matter if the activity is seen as a traditional one or not.  He does not care if you marketing/advertising is on a Super Bowl ad or is “on a used napkin”.  He does not care if the activity is seen as traditional or guerrilla marketing – he only cares if it helps his client achieve their goals in the most cost-effective manner!   Recently, Al Garlick and Jay Levinson met to explore a partnership relationship.  After reviewing Al’s portfolio Jay said “You have been living guerrilla marketing.”  Both organizations believe that small business must focus on profits and Al is now a master trainer for Jay’s Guerrilla Marketing International, providing guerrilla marketing coaching for individuals in group and one-on-one settings.
